The Internet Miracle: Perez Hilton
The internet is the great equalizer. Anyone with a computer can start and build a business from nothing. And make as much money as they want to make.
Case in point: Perez Hilton. What started as a blog about celebrities has grown into a multi-million dollar business. He is rumored to write his blog from a Coffee Bean Cafe in Hollywood. And all he does is write about celebrities, and write little pictures on their photos using Photoshop.
Perez Hilton is growing his empire all the time. I heard him on one of the most popular morning radio shows in Los Angeles. He sells advertising on his site. His income is only limited by his imagination. And the imagination of anyone he hires that will make more money for him.
Currently, his blog gets about 5 million people a month. That is more than many big web sites on the internet, as well as many newspapers and television stations. And he is finding more ways of making money all the time. Currently he is the 396th most visited site on the internet. An amazing accomplishment.
The point of all this is that we can use new technology to find new businesses and achieve anything that we want. Currently his business makes more money than many old school businesses with dozens of employees. And since he can do most everything using computers and automated systems (like his advertising system), he gets to keep most of the money he makes.
In a traditional business, most of the income went to paying for things like salaries and benefits for employees, as well as office rent and expenses. But computers do not require salaries. And they don’t get benefits. The Coffee Bean does not charge rent to its customers. It only charges $3 for a Cafe Mocha! How outstanding is that!
All this to say, welcome to the revolution in technology. The revolution in business. And the revolution in ideas. Those of us who can harness these powerful forces can create whatever we want. Its not a question of what we can do. Its only a question of what we will do.
