More Good News in a Bad Economy
It seems that the economy is the number one topic of discussion these days. Most people are blaming it for all of their financial problems. The news is full of stories about the negative effects of the terrible economy such as foreclosures and layoffs.
Maybe we are just die hard are optimists, but I noticed that my previous post entitled Falling Prices are the Bright Side of a Bad Economy was quite popular. So here are more reasons why the bad economy is actually good for us.
One reason that I touched upon in the previous post is the falling price of oil and gasoline. Not only does it make life easy for us at the pump, but it has a cascading effect throughout the economy. Most of the things that we consume are physical, and therefore require energy to be delivered to us. When oil prices are high, it costs more money to ship everything. And these cost increases can be seen in every physical product that we consume. It includes drinks, food, books, computers, and even cars. The good news is that as the cost of crude oil falls, the price of most of the other items in the economy falls as well.

And that got me thinking. What are some other things that we can be happy about in this bad economy? Has the following experience ever happened to you? You go to the grocery store, and when you check out, not only does the check out girl completely ignore you, but she is actually are having a conversation with the person who is bagging groceries. Or, when you call customer service for your cell phone, you get the distinct impression that the customer disservice representative is happy that they will not help you.
Terrible customer service is a result of the booming economy, which has lasted for about a decade. Anybody who had any skills whatsoever was able to get a great job. Only the people who had no skills, and no desire to learn anything or to do a good job were left to serve customers. That’s why customer service has steadily declined over the last few years. Fortunately, for us, the bad economy means that many qualified and effective employees will be working in customer service.
Living in Los Angeles, one of the biggest changes happening is the increasing cars on the road. It seems like the number of cars has doubled in the last five years, and the traffic has gotten completely out of control. This too is due to the long-booming economy. Now that the economy is in recession (for now), the number of cars and number of people driving is decreasing. And this effect is true for all major cities throughout America.
It’s obvious that these chaotic economic times are a big challenge. Many people have lost their jobs, their houses, and are facing serious financial problems. However, it seems that it’s possible to find the good part of this financial crisis. I wonder how many other good things there are about this economy that we haven’t thought of yet…
