AI–Wave of the Future–Rewrites the Past
As artificial intelligence–or machine intelligence–makes strides to become a powerful tool of the future, it’s interesting to read this article from a Wired blog.
Scientists are using AI as a tool to unlock the mysteries of symbols found in the Indus Valley. This 4,000-year-old script may represent a spoken language. But linguists have found the script so hard to decipher, they weren’t sure if it was just a bunch of pictures.

Rajesh Rao, a machine learning expert, used the Markov model to explore the meaning–or possible meaning–of the symbols. The computer program looks for patterns using artificial intelligence.
The researchers entered sequences of four spoken languages–ancient Sumerian, Sanskrit and Old Tamil, as well as modern English–into the program. Then they gave it samples of four non-spoken communication systems, like DNA and Fortran.
The program could calculate the level of order present in each language.
The program actually returned the grammatical rules of this Indus Valley language. And, as Rao points out, this may just be the beginning of the use of AI in archaeology.
“It’s only recently that archaeologists have started to apply computational approaches in a rigid manner,” said Rao. “The time is ripe.”
