Will Automated Trading Catch On?

April 28th, 2009

Many people, especially the skeptical types, think that Automated Trading will never catch on. They think that people would never trust a computer to invest for them or manage their money. They cite the dangers of bugs and viruses as proof that Automated Trading will never work.

It’s true that Automated Trading is a largely untapped technology. Many hedge funds use Automated Trading systems to buy and sell stocks and other assets, but this technology has yet to become widely available to the average investor. We can’t wait for the day when most people use Automated Trading systems to make money with less risk. Perhaps one day soon, this technology will become as widespread as online banking.

Automated Trading is not the first technology to be met with resistance. Actually, every major change is met with animosity and resistance, especially from skeptics. Consider online brokerages such as E*Trade and TD Ameritrade. When online brokerages first appeared, people thought that the old, established ways of buying stocks would win over the risks of buying online through a website. The idea of getting rid of the relationship with the cigar smoking stock broker in favor of a computer was ludicrous. It seems that the internet won after all.

We see the same thing happening with Automated Trading. Since most people have never heard of it, they think that it won’t work. But it will only take a few early adopters to dispel the myth. The proverbial tipping point will be reached, and the technology will go from being a dream to being as commonplace as using an online brokerage.
