Lessons from the Korean Taco Truck

June 17th, 2009

People say that the economy is tanking. Or that it’s hard to find a job. Or, you need money to make money. I disagree. I think it’s possible to make as much money as we want, regardless of the economy. How?

Through the power of ideas.

Have you heard of the Korean Taco Truck?

Unless you live in LA, you probably haven’t heard of it. Some Korean guys went out and bought a regular taco truck, and then did something really smart: they put a spin on it to make it special. Instead of just another taco truck (they seem to be everywhere in LA), they made theirs different. And special.

They started by creating outstanding Korean tacos and other Korean foods. And then, they added the magic. They created a marketing system that successfully created enough buzz that people line up for hours to eat the tacos!

How did they do it?

  1. First they created a great product. Tacos good enough that people will actually enjoy eating them. Not just anther taco. But a Korean BBQ taco that is not readily available in most areas of LA. And, most Korean restaurants don’t serve this style of Korean food anyway.
So, they created a niche product that has value for the customer. And this product has a unique sales proposition, or USP.
  2. They created a successful marketing system. There are millions of products and services that are better than everything that we have ever used. We just don’t know about these products and services. A successful business needs a marketing system to find customers, regardless of the quality the product or service. Without marketing, a business will fail, no matter how great the product.
How did they do the marketing? Using the internet. How do you find the Korean Taco Truck that drives around? Check their blog and twitter, of course! (Tonight they will be in downtown, in case you get hungry…) Want to see the food? Check Flickr
  3. They did something different. Instead of complaining about the economy or sitting around in a dead end job cubicle, they found a way. They used the power of the internet to sell tacos. They took an old idea (taco truck) and applied it to a growing trend (Korean food).
  4. They leveraged the power of ideas. They used their brains and thought of solutions.
  5. They took action. They went out and got the taco truck. They found someone to do internet marketing. They started driving around and selling tacos. 99% of ideas never see the light of day. Action makes them real.

Well, that’s lessons learned from the Korean Taco Truck. Hope you enjoyed it, or at least worked up an appetite.
