Internet Revoultions are Accelerating

June 18th, 2009

Recently there has been so much talk about Twitter. And Facebook. Before that it was YouTube. The rates of adoption are greater than anything mankind (and womankind) has seen before. It got me thinking.

If this is the web 2.0, perhaps it took a few years to mature. Let’s say 3 years. So it started in 2006. That means web 1.0 which really got started in 1995, was 11 years old in 2006. So web 2.0 is happening perhaps 2 -4 times faster than 1.0. I don’t know how much longer 2.0 will last, but 3.0 is on the horizon.

It’s interesting because we can see the results of accelerating technology everywhere. Not just in CPUs. Not just in hard drives. Not just in the internet. But even in social media. These web sites have little to do with technology. Yes, they have great interfaces that are easy to use, but I don’t think the technology is the underlying force. After all, they still use a web browser and HTML and databases.

It’s a clear case of accelerating technology because these sites all leverage off other accelerating technologies. Computers, the Internet, and bandwidth price/performance are responsible for making these sites possible. The question is,

What technology will these sites enable and accelerate?

I guess it’s too soon to say, but perhaps there are some scientists communicating by Twitter. And these scientists come up with a new idea. Maybe it’s Twitter for researchers. It’s impossible to predict exactly how these sites will accelerate the race to the Singularity, but I think it’s pretty clear that it will.
