The Other Secret… And The Proof Of Global Meme
In 2006, a multimedia phenomena was born.
It was called The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne and a cast of New Thought experts, and its positive-thinking gospel was soon spread throughout the world with video downloads, books, and a movie, all of which featured adherents to the Law of Attraction. The law of attraction, simply stated, says that your thoughts and feelings attract those corresponding events.
After millions of books and DVD sales, however, the country went bankrupt. We faced higher employment. Our financial system imploded.
If there were so many people envisioning prosperity, how did an economic meltdown occur?
There are a few theories.
Obviously, it could be that the whole Secret thing is nonsense. But I’ll toss something else out…
One theory is that with every reader or viewer of the Secret, or any other positive-thinking tract, there were ten people who espoused the negative-thinking mantras. In fact, it’s easy to see that at the same time the law of attraction was bubbling in the global meme, another thread of thinking was uniting the global mind. Millions of posts and books assailed the culture of prosperity. Wealth and riches were looked down on as “evil.” There were calls to tax the rich and to vandalize SUVs and other signs of wealth. Others said that this growth was wrecking the global climate.
Interestingly, many of the same folks who read and espoused the principles of the Secret, carried with them the same zero-sum thinking of global economic fear and concern.
Whether this meme was unleashed out of concern for the earth, or out of envy, it’s impossible to determine, but the fact that these two currents of thought dominated early 21st century popular thinking is undeniable.
I don’t judge either side; but I wonder if this is a reflection on how global attitudes can change the world. A thought can become an attitude. This can spread into the actions of a few and then actions of the many.
Perhaps that’s the true Secret.
