The 4th of July and the Meaning of Independence
Did you have a great 4th of July weekend? Fireworks? BBQ? Nice cold beer? Living in LA, I saw a marked change in activity. Everyone seemed to take off on Friday morning, and even today (Monday) a lot of people are gone. Despite the constant bad economic news, there seems to be no shortage of money to get away for vacation.

And, I saw a similar phenomenon online. Many blogs stopped posting. One site that we use to track blogs, Tip’d, had virtually no usage whatsoever! This is a site that attracts 440,000 visitors a month. And on the Independence Day weekend almost nobody visited. Wow.
Where did they go?
So that got me thinking. It seems that everyone has taken a vacation from striving to achieve financial freedom. Don’t get me wrong. It’s good to take a break. But it is also important to remember the reason that we have independence. It is not a meaningless holiday that allows us to escape reality for 3 days a year. It has a deeper meaning that is important for our country and for our psyche as well.
Independence is the drive that created the best country in the world. “Taxation without representation” was the call to arms that set us on the path. Yet it seems that so many people are perfectly happy with no independence whatsoever. Or at least no financial independence. They are dependent on their employer for their job. They are dependent on their job for money. They are dependent on the government to help them. They will be dependent on social security when they retire.
Now that the Independence Day holiday is over, let’s remember why we are here. One of the most powerful freedoms that we can achieve is financial freedom. It is not a gift but an opportunity. An opportunity for every person in America and in every other country. To take advantage of the unlimited ways that we can make money. And to achieve financial freedom so that we can be financially independent.

Amen, brother.
