2010 Forecast: Clouds And A 100 Percent Chance Of Algorithms

Is the first decade of the 21st century really almost over? Wasn’t it just yesterday that we prepared for the collapse of society because of the Y2K bug? Wasn’t it just yesterday that we laughed off the Mayan 2012 prophecies because they were so far in the future?
Well, the new year and the new decade is fast approaching. This usually brings out the sunshine-and-smile futurists and the doom-and-gloom prognosticators. They all have their vision for the future.
What’s mine?
I’d say, at least for the financial world, there’s a 100 percent chance of Cloud Computing with a algorithmic trading storm in store for the next decade.
Cloud Computing is a game-changing technology in finance. Off-site computing power and applications are far more robust and efficient than the ones stacked on hard drives and individual servers.
Algorithmic trading–essentially advanced technology that conducts Automated Trading–will also be more prevalent in the next decade, despite the increasing attention and caution paid to this powerful technology.
Progress Software, one player in the field, believes “In-The Cloud” technology will become mainstream.
“This model, known as Software as a Service (SaaS), will level the playing field enabling smaller upfront investments and a move away from “on premise” deployments.”
Founder of the company’s Apama division, Dr. John Bates, adds that this technology will dominate the financial industry.
“We will see hosted services for algorithmic trading and risk management become the major method of deployment. Hedge funds in particular will be key adopters of hosted trading systems as a way of dealing with the operational and cost challenges caused by the financial crisis.”
This is good news and in line with our thinking that technology will become exponentially more powerful, but we want to see the technology spread out among all the participants in the market, not just the big players.
Looking at past that’ll happen, too. For the smart trader, it’s just a matter of time and preparation.
