Is this the End of the Dollar?

October 17th, 2009

The United States has had a free ride for the last 100 years. Every country in the world held the dollar as its reserve currency. That means that there was more demand for the dollar than for any other currency. The massive natural resources, growing economy, military dominance and overall desirability of America made it possible to establish the dollar as the common measure of value throughout the world. In addition, until Richard Nixon took us off the gold standard, the dollar was redeemable for gold.

The net result of all this is that America has been able to print as much money as it wanted. Deficit? No problem. We’ll just print more money. All the countries around the world will hold the dollar, and there is no limit to the amount of debt they will buy. No money to pay back the debt? No problem. Just print more money.

What’s happening now?

The Internet Revolutionizes Politics

January 24th, 2009

It seems that the Internet is capable of revolutionizing every aspect of human life. Originally, it changed the way people shopped. Then, it made it possible for everyone to have their own magazine, and called it the blog. Now, it introduces transparency and accountability to the political system!

The PolitiFact website tracks over 500 promises made by Obama, so far. And, it keeps a running total of every promise he has kept, forgotten about, or compromised on! This allows everyone in the world to see just how honest the president of the America is!

George Bush Senior was famous for for promising “Read my lips: no new taxes.” It was easy for the American public to remember and recognize the sound bite. And it was easy to notice when he raised taxes.

But the Obameter allows everyone to track every promise in great detail. There is an explanation of exactly what the promise is, and what action Obama took to make it happen.

So perhaps this will usher in a new era of accountability for politicians. In the old paradigm, politicians would say anything to get into office, do whatever they wanted for four or eight years and then move on with their lives. I hope that old paradigm is gone. Perhaps in this new paradigm of transparency will give us a new level of honesty from the political system.

Obama and Personal Success

January 14th, 2009

As Obama takes office, Americans are waiting with baited breath for hundreds of billions of dollars of economic stimulus to save the economy. I met up with my friend Chopper today, and asked him, “What do you think about this whole Obama thing?”

He said,

Look, it’s great to have a black president. The funny thing is that everybody is talking trash about Bush. They say he messed up the economy, and he messed up the Middle East, and all this other stuff. Everyone says 2008 was such a terrible year.

But you know what? 2008 was a great year for me. 2008 was the year that I launched my blog. 2008 was the year that I launched my studio. 2008 was the year I launched my business. All those things about Bush may be true, but this is America. I can make as much money as I want, no matter what the color of the president’s skin is.

And I thought, “Isn’t that interesting”. And it’s true. Anybody can launch their own business, start a website, or create any number of other ways of making money, no matter what the economy does. They can achieve financial success no matter what the president does.

So I thought, “I wonder how many millions of people launched blogs last year. I wonder how many people took the first step is to financial freedom.” They may not have become rich, successful and happy in 2008, but I hope that they at least took the first steps.
