Weekly Wisdom: Best Personal Finance and Personal Growth Posts Of 2009

December 27th, 2009

Was 2009 a trying year financially for you?

Possibly. But that may be a good thing. Poor economies usually teach us more about smart financial living than good economies, which usually teach us to throw our money at stuff we’ll never use.

There were plenty of lessons on personal finance and personal growth brought to us by the blogosphere and other areas of the internet.

I’ve collected some of the best personal finance and personal growth posts of 2009 in hopes that these lessons stay with us in 2010–no matter what the economic conditions.

*Note: This is a very unofficial ranking. And the internet is an exponentially-growing sea of information. So, I may have missed a few good posts. If you have a favorite personal finance or personal growth post that really inspired you, please add it in the comment section.

Thanks! Here’s to a wise 2010 for you!

How Your Thoughts Affect Debt

November 17th, 2009

Yesterday, we talked about how your beliefs can attract wealth. Not only do your thoughts influence your investing and saving habits on a personal level, but these beliefs, in a collective sense, can cause macroeconomic changes.

But can your thoughts attract debt?

It seems so. Your spending behavior is directed by your beliefs. Financial psychologists say that, like most mental processes, these beliefs can be complex and often contrarian. Thoughts and beliefs about debt are the most complicated.

You probably think that debt comes from over-confidence, or financial hubris. You’re spending money you don’t have because you’re sure the resources to repay the debt will be there one day… some day. But that may not be the case.

Weekly Wisdom: The Pimp Power Of The Internet And Smart Record Companies

August 2nd, 2009

Another great week for free learning.

This week I’ve come across wisdom that runs the gamut, from practical advice on owning company stock to how to turn on the pimping power of the Internet.

It’s probably not what you think. Here’s a sample:

The internet has the power to do so many things for you. And I’d like to show you how to set it up so you don’t have to think anymore. Let’s leave the thinking to the ones that want to think: the computers.

Another interesting thought comes from BoingBoing. When videos use unlicensed music, record companies usually freak out and sue. As you’ll read, when a video of a wedding entrance went viral the record company that owned the song did a smart, smart thing that might indicate that new business models are created when people stop being stupid.

So, let’s get at the links.

Beginner’s Mind And Financial Success

June 4th, 2009

When financial distress hits, you notice one thing: people freeze.

The ease of accepting new thoughts and new ideas vanish. They resort to old thinking.

It’s probably a comfort thing. Once you’re stressed, you want to avoid more stress and new situations and new ideas can be uncomfortable and stressful.

We resist risk.

Unfortunately, this is the exact time that you should embrace risk. In the words of Kris Kristofferson by way of Janis Joplin.

Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left  to lose.

And, perhaps, when you ain’t got nothing, you got everything to win.

If you feel this way, this is a time for a financial “beginner’s mind.”

The Power of Imagination

January 20th, 2009

Many people love to minimize the incredible power of our imagination. Imaginary friends are the domain of children, and daydreaming in fantasy is the mark of a lazy employee. At least that’s what people think. I suggest to you, quite the opposite is true.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand. – Einstein

As a matter of fact, one of the Einstein’s greatest breakthroughs started when he was sitting in class bored out of his mind. As he stared at the clock, he imagined what it would be like to travel on a beam of light. From this silly thought, emerged the thinking of one of the most powerful minds in history.

Many people think that Einstein’s success was due to his genius. But I suggest to you something else. Is it possible that Einstein was able to change the world not because he was smarter, but because he used his mind in a different way? Maybe he was able to change the world because he believed in his imagination.

Intelligence is not a prerequisite for success. You don’t have to be smarter to succeed at anything. Because success is dependent not on skill, but on strategy. And most strategies for success are very simple, and can be easily learned by anyone.

Maybe we can even learn to use the same skills that Einstein used. Perhaps one of the skills for success is to use our imagination and believe it can help us in powerful ways. Perhaps anyone can make the same powerful mark in history by imagining the way Einstein did.

If The Brain Is A Computer, Is The Mind A Quantum Computer?

December 23rd, 2008

George recently wrote a post about the brain’s similarity to a computer.

There are neuroanatomists, like Jill Bolte Taylor, who back up George’s premise and, in fact, believe that the brain behaves as a parallel processor (right hemisphere) and a serial processor (left hemisphere).

I’d like to take this analogy one step further: if the brain is a computer, could the MIND be a quantum computer? A quantum algorithm uses superposition (or quantum entanglement) to work on data exponentially. Whereas a regular computer operates on single bits, a quantum computer, technically speaking, can use qubits to manipulate multiple operations at the same time.

Stuart Hameroff, a anesthesiologist, and Sir Richard Penrose, a quantum physicist, say that at the nano-scale level the brain is engaging in quantum computations. This is so fundamental, the researchers suggest that the brain is literally wired into reality.

Is this the point where the brain becomes the mind?

There are those, like Hameroff and Penrose, who think so, but other scientists still aren’t sure. Consciousness remains the hardest soft science.

By the way, Hameroff doesn’t believe that the Singularity will happen, stating that AI won’t be able to compete with the quantum computational operations in the human brain–or mind. However, he doesn’t address whether AI could be used to augment the mind.

The Mind-Music-Machine Connection

December 12th, 2008

Sound AdviceAs technology increases, most futurists expect minds to be upgraded by machines. However, according to author Rick Notter, of Better Sound Advice, machines are benefiting the brain right now… through music.

Music, according to Notter, can relax, rejuvenate and re-wire your current thinking machine. In fact, according to Notter, music can help you cure your insomnia, lose weight, improve your attitude, and change your life.

This isn’t necessarily a new idea–from war drums to love songs–music was meant to create emotions and emotions can create real physiological changes. Look at your friend’s face when his or her favorite song plays. Think about how you’re transported back in time when you hear a song from “back in the day.” And watch people dance

Music is also part ofa new generation of Mind Spas, something that is very much associated with Singularity mind-machine integration. Here, one doctor explains how these mind spas are revitalizing an aging population.

Dr. David Loewenstein, a University of Miami brain disorders researcher, said there’s much interest in any therapies that could help keep aging brains quick. With 78 million baby boomers beginning to hit their 60s, “there’s a big market for these sort of things.”

There are apparently a lot of ways to get to the Singularity.

If Wealth Is In The Mind, Here’s How To Hack It

November 7th, 2008

MindHacks.org

I’m fascinated about artificial intelligence. We’re trying to hack artificial intelligence to create financial systems that make high returns at low-risk levels.

But your regular, plain-old mind is a pretty fascinating brand of intelligence, too. And it’s potential is just as untapped as these pioneering days of AI.

If you want to “hack” your own mind and uncork its potential, I recommend you check out MindHacks at www.mindhacks.org. (You can also check out MindHacks.com for more of a neuroscientific angle.)

MindHacks is “the hottest stories in the world of Self-Growth, Sprituality and Mind Science.” And I have to agree. It covers everything from lucid dreaming to health and goal-setting. The articles are all well-written and well-presented, so you end up spending waaaaay to much time enjoying the posts.

One of the most amazing posts was “The Man Who Remembers Forever” about a person who can literally remember every detail and fact that he has encountered in his life. (Honestly, there are a lot of things I’d like to forget though.) But, still just a brief glimpse into the infinite power of intelligence–artificial or otherwise.

So, check out MindHacks.

Moving Things with Your Brain

September 13th, 2008

Your brain moves all sorts of things: it swivels your neck; it flexes and retracts your arms, it can move your legs. These miracles are really just an electro-chemical reaction.NeuroSky

Now companies are attempting to turn brainwaves into the ultimate joystick. NeutoSky is making an brain-object interface. Your brain produces brainwaves that become the commands. These brainwaves can be sent wirelessly to the object you want to move.

This device may be released initially as a component for video games. There’s also the possibility that this can help people stay awake while driving. Falling asleep while driving is lethal.

I have no doubt that as this technology is refined it will generate other uses. It may be a sign that as technology advances the line between machine and mind will blur.

But, the brain doesn’t just move little objects on a screen; brains move markets and machines are being used to tap into this.

People thoughts, hopes, and dreams are the basis for the world economy and the various markets. Online Investing AI is hoping to tap into these mass brain commands out there by using advance technology to create investment systems that produce high returns at minimum risk.

If a brain-object interface is the next step in mental evolution, this is the next step in financial evolution.
