The Uncertainty of Limits

April 22nd, 2010

It can’t be done.

It’s impossible.

If you want to ensure that something–anything–becomes possible, just utter those words. Think about Lord Kelvin, one of the most respected scientists of his era. Heck, any era.

Lord Kelvin made the mistake of setting a limit by saying heavier-than-air flight, i.e. human-powered flight, would never happen. It was impossible.

It only took the Wright Brothers and a whole cast of daring aviators to prove this limit incorrect. That’s not the only example. Limits–universal or personal–are never certain.

Weekly Wisdom: Best Personal Finance and Personal Growth Posts Of 2009

December 27th, 2009

Was 2009 a trying year financially for you?

Possibly. But that may be a good thing. Poor economies usually teach us more about smart financial living than good economies, which usually teach us to throw our money at stuff we’ll never use.

There were plenty of lessons on personal finance and personal growth brought to us by the blogosphere and other areas of the internet.

I’ve collected some of the best personal finance and personal growth posts of 2009 in hopes that these lessons stay with us in 2010–no matter what the economic conditions.

*Note: This is a very unofficial ranking. And the internet is an exponentially-growing sea of information. So, I may have missed a few good posts. If you have a favorite personal finance or personal growth post that really inspired you, please add it in the comment section.

Thanks! Here’s to a wise 2010 for you!

Weekly Wisdom: The Pimp Power Of The Internet And Smart Record Companies

August 2nd, 2009

Another great week for free learning.

This week I’ve come across wisdom that runs the gamut, from practical advice on owning company stock to how to turn on the pimping power of the Internet.

It’s probably not what you think. Here’s a sample:

The internet has the power to do so many things for you. And I’d like to show you how to set it up so you don’t have to think anymore. Let’s leave the thinking to the ones that want to think: the computers.

Another interesting thought comes from BoingBoing. When videos use unlicensed music, record companies usually freak out and sue. As you’ll read, when a video of a wedding entrance went viral the record company that owned the song did a smart, smart thing that might indicate that new business models are created when people stop being stupid.

So, let’s get at the links.

The Mind-Music-Machine Connection

December 12th, 2008

Sound AdviceAs technology increases, most futurists expect minds to be upgraded by machines. However, according to author Rick Notter, of Better Sound Advice, machines are benefiting the brain right now… through music.

Music, according to Notter, can relax, rejuvenate and re-wire your current thinking machine. In fact, according to Notter, music can help you cure your insomnia, lose weight, improve your attitude, and change your life.

This isn’t necessarily a new idea–from war drums to love songs–music was meant to create emotions and emotions can create real physiological changes. Look at your friend’s face when his or her favorite song plays. Think about how you’re transported back in time when you hear a song from “back in the day.” And watch people dance

Music is also part ofa new generation of Mind Spas, something that is very much associated with Singularity mind-machine integration. Here, one doctor explains how these mind spas are revitalizing an aging population.

Dr. David Loewenstein, a University of Miami brain disorders researcher, said there’s much interest in any therapies that could help keep aging brains quick. With 78 million baby boomers beginning to hit their 60s, “there’s a big market for these sort of things.”

There are apparently a lot of ways to get to the Singularity.
