Vending Machines of the Apocalypse

June 1st, 2010

Pic from New York Times

I’m convinced that the world is either going to hell in a handbasket, or is pivoting toward the exponential growth of a technological singularity.

What’s the source of this paradox?

I recently looked at the creation of synthetic life that could, on one hand be used to create fuel sources and medicine, or unleash an uncontrollable disease.

Then, as if I needed a more perfect example, there’s this story in the New York Times about the latest types of vending machines.

In Tokyo, you can find vending machines that use electronic eyes to evaluate skin to determine if the customer is old enough to buy tobacco. In Canada, you can apparently find vending machines with flat irons for hair.

Now, in a luxury hotel, you can shell out $1,000 for gold bars and coins.

Here are some other examples:

The Future of Automated Trading

June 30th, 2009

As the Automated Trading revolution gathers steam, it will be fascinating to watch how it unfolds. Right now, very few people know or use Automated Trading systems. Yet this is not the stone ages. This is the world of the Internet, and even Internet 2.0.

In today’s ultra-connected world, information travels faster than ever. Even regular web sites and email is incredibly slow compared to blogs and Twitter. As the rate of information exchange accelerates, so does the rate of change throughout the world. Researchers and developers are able to communicate and leverage off each other’s work faster. And acceptance of new products and services by consumers is accelerating as well.

What does this mean for the Automated Trading revolution?

Saving Money With Visualization

May 14th, 2009

shoppingmallAccording to scientists, when you buy something, chemicals secrete through your brain that make you feel good.

Like how a jogger feels after a great run.

Like how a painter feels when she lays her brush down after creating a masterpiece.

And, unfortunately, like an addict feels when he’s taken his drug of choice.

So, that mental shopping trigger can be good… or it can be bad. But, did you know there’s a way visualization can help you tap this power?

Instead of whipping out the credit card and drooling down the lane of your mall or shopping center, take a virtual shopping trip.

Here’s how you do it.

Harness the Power of the Internet: Shopping With Dealnews

January 25th, 2009

One of the first big successes of the Internet, way back in the day, was Amazon.com. It quickly became the leader in selling books online, and seemed to show us where the Internet was going. That was the Internet 1.0: it was all about shopping.

But as the Internet evolves, communication is king. Through blogs and RSS feeds, it has become easier and easier to distribute and syndicate information. And one piece of information that is in high demand is the latest deal on electronics or other stuff.

Enter Dealnews. This website aggregates all the best deals on just about everything, from iPods to shoes. If you’re looking to buy anything, I suggest you check their site and see what special deals are available.

How good are the deals? Well, they’re pretty good. They’ll save you a lot of time shopping all around and searching. I’ve seen laptop computers for $300. And 50 inch plasmas, $1000. But don’t take my word for it, go and check it out yourself!

Amazon’s Financial Success

December 28th, 2008

It’s the holidays. This is the time that stores expect to make money. Christmas, Hanukkah, and all the holidays are a gold mine for retailers, who often make 15% of their sales this week alone.

The Ubiquitous Amazon BoxWhen people aren’t shopping, they’re watching TV and learning about the financial crisis around the world. The automakers are complaining about the credit markets. The retailers are complaining about the housing market. The shoppers are worried about the economy. But there is one company that is not complaining about anything.

Amazon.com posted record-breaking sales, and is having its best holiday season ever. How is this possible? When nearly every other company is losing money, and the whole US economy is going straight down, how is it possible that one company can do better than ever? It’s because Amazon.com is committed to finding new ways of making money.

One driver of Amazon’s success is the trend of online shopping. We all know it’s 1,000 times more convenient, faster, easier and cheaper to just buy something online than to actually go out and buy it. And that’s why online shopping is growing at double-digit rates every year, while shopping in stores is going down. So Amazon has positioned itself to ride the trend that makes it easy to succeed.

The Wii Gaming ConsoleAnother powerful driver for Amazon is in the innovation. From the Kindle to the ever increasing range of goods that it sells, Amazon is always finding new ways of making money. It started as a bookstore. Now, some of the biggest sellers are gaming consoles. If you consider the fact that a gaming console that costs $300 is going to make the company a lot more money than just a book, it’s easy to see how Amazon sales and profits continue to grow.

It’s easy to see their big differences between the average American store and Amazon.com. And, it’s interesting to think about the difference is in strategy as well. What if every company in America used innovation like Amazon does? What would that do for the US economy?

Finding Black Friday Deals

November 26th, 2008

This post might seem a little out-of-place, but, check it out, it’s right on target.

Online Investing AI is about how you can use technology to master your personal finance picture and become financially independent, however you wish to define that.

Taking care of the other side of your balance sheet–spending–will be the topic of the next couple of posts. Technology can be used to help you spend your money better and, during the holiday season, you’ll probably need all the help you can get.

And, hey, deals are deals.

One of the biggest shopping days is Black Friday and, despite economic pressures, it’s likely to be the biggest shopping day of this year, too. Back in the day (and I go back in the day) you never knew where the big deals were until Black Friday hit and you could view the print ads in newspapers and magazines. So, you couldn’t really comparitively shop and plot strategies.

Some of the following enterprising web sites allow you to take a peak at the ads and circulars to get a jump on your Black Friday shopping plans.
