What is neuro-linguistic programming?

Neuro-linguistic Programming, or NLP as it’s more commonly known, is a psychological approach to improve mental performance. Practitioners say that an increase in physical and spiritual performance follows after you begin NLP training.

Basically–and probably a little too superficially put–NLP examines your self-talk and then offers ways to re-program this inner talk that is more aligned with achievement.

The question is: can NLP be used to improve your trading and investing performance?

According to Charles Faulkner of New Market Wizards, NLP can help traders and investors.

When we change those programs, just as when we change or upgrade software, we immediately get positive changes in our performance. We get immediate improvements in how we think, feel, act and live.

Turtle Trader explains that NLP fits in with the overall philosophy that trading skills are teachable.

In honor of Festivus, the Dec. 23rd holiday that the television series Seinfeld made popular, I present the investment techniques of Mr. Cosmo Kramer.

Kramer, one of Festivus’s early adherents, may on the outside be just another hipster dufus engaged in a series of misadventures on the streets of New York City, but he has a certain style. It’s a style that might have made him a great investor or trader had he not gone into the coffee table book that’s a coffee table publishing business or the giant ball of oil industry.

From his head-of-the-pack mentality to his mindfulness of new opportunities, Kramer was a natural trend trader.

And you can use some of these techniques in your own investing discipline.

During the past week, we explored how thinking patterns–or programs–can cause people to lose money. The four essential negative programs are social proof, greed, the need to be right, and a lack of discipline.

While the list isn’t meant to be exclusive, awareness of these problems is the first step to righting your own financial ship. Once you realize you have a problem, you can begin to take effective measures to change.

Having said that, it’s not always easy. A quick check of some of the investment world’s best traders reveals that it’s easy to slip into bad trading programs. Richard Dennis, who is profiled in Way of the Turtle, after turning $400 into $200 million and establishing a group of traders called the Turtles, fell into some bad trading patterns and suffered negative returns.

Fortunately, there are tools available to help you transition from negative trading programs to positive, disciplined trading. Trading aids and Automated Trading systems are the most promising and can be used together for the active trader.

Trend trading is one of the most popular trading theories. It’s the subject of numerous books and articles.

Trend traders look for long-term price movements in various markets. These movements can be positive, or negative. Looking back over the past few years, you could see that trend traders latched on to long upswings in the gold and silver (enter your email for an analysis) and the steep run up in oil, as well as short movements in the U.S. dollar.

For trending stock traders, the continual climb of Google (GOOG–enter your email a free trend analysis) and the demise of GM, were probably easy plays.

Despite the track record of many successful traders who use this methodology, trend trading has positives and negatives.
